UK National Organ Donation Week: 3rd-9th of September

Last year over 34,000 people joined the NHS Organ Donor Register during ‘Organ Donation Week’ alone. Let’s see if we can do even better this year…

Organ donation is giving an organ to help someone who needs a transplant. Transplants can save lives or dramatically improve someone’s quality of life. In fact it is estimated that more than 50,000 people in the UK are living today thanks to organ donation and transplant!

This includes:

  • Kidney transplants – 36,300 people
  • Pancreas transplants – 1,900 people
  • Cardiothoracic transplants – 3,900 people
  • Liver transplants – 9,800 people
  • Intestinal transplants – 100 people

You Can Make a Real Difference

While these statistics are impressive there is still a lot more work to be done. There are currently around 6,000 people on the UK Transplant Waiting List and last year it is estimated that over 400 people died while waiting for a transplant.
