In February 2014, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) introduced restrictions stating helicopter passengers must sit adjacent to a window compatible with their body size.
Following the introduction of the restriction, Step Change in Safety launched in October 2014 the Shoulder Width Measurement strategy whereby all helicopter passengers must be measured by their shoulder width by specially trained measurers for the restriction deadline of the 1st April 2015. The strategy seen passengers whose shoulders measure more than 55.9cm classed as Extra Broad and would be required to sit adjacent to a window that's diagonal size is compatible with this measurement.
Step Change in Safety has recently announced an update to the Shoulder Width Measurement strategy. As of the 1st July 2017, all passengers who measure Extra Broad are required to be re-measured at frequent intervals. It has been recommended that these re-measurements are aligned with BOSIET expiry. Also, anyone who has a measurement of 54.8cm or above will need to be re-measured.
