#transition success story - handyman to oilman

Six job offers and a permanent position for greenhand Phil

AIS Survivex trainee and former handyman, Phil Green is celebrating after scooping his first oil and gas trip – and it’s turned into a permanent position!

37-year-old Phil is originally from Northern Ireland but has lived in Aberdeen for the past 20 years. During a varied career, Phil has turned his hand to everything from barman to delivery driver, labourer and handyman but the desire for a more stable career and quality time off drew him to the offshore oil and gas industry.

“My friends are all in oil and gas so I had a good idea of what the work is like,” said Phil. “As I got a little older, the thought of an offshore career began to appeal and my friend Gary Morrison pointed out how easily transferrable my skillset was and persuaded me to train with AIS Survivex.

“After completing all the mandatory BOSIET and MIST courses, Gary suggested I add fire certs and Banksman Slinger Initial to make my CV more desirable because I had no previous offshore experience. I decided to go for it and paid with the interest free finance option to make the training more affordable.”

This certainly paid off for Phil. Within five days of completing his training with AIS Survivex, he had three job offers on the table and was preparing for his first offshore trip. Unfortunately, after testing positive for COVID-19, he had to decline the opportunity.

“I was gutted and really felt I’d missed my chance of an offshore job,” said Phil. “But luckily three more job offers quickly followed and one had a start date in 11 days, giving me enough time to shake off COVID.

“I’ve now started as a Roustabout with COSL Drilling and I absolutely love it! The role is so varied, I’m always doing something different and the crew are great – really supportive. I’ve just found out my contract is being made permanent so I’m delighted.

“There are so many people to thank for helping me. Thanks to COSL for giving me this opportunity. Thanks AIS Survivex - the team there is brilliant and really help get you through the training. Thanks to recruitment agency AGR for helping me find my dream job. Big thanks to my partner Laura Bowman for being an amazing support and thanks to my friend Gary Morrison for helping me make the move.

“For anyone thinking about changing careers. I’d say go for it. It’s certainly worked out well for me. The best advice I could give anyone is invest in yourself. I believe the HOIT, HERTM and Helideck certs sealed it for me and made my CV really appealing to employers.”
