Within just four weeks of completing his offshore training with our sister company AIS Training, former garage owner, William Smith from Stirling, secured his first offshore job in the North Sea.
For the past ten years, William has run his own car spraying business, working six days a week, but wanted a career change to give him more quality time with family. With existing transferable skills in surface preparation and paint spraying, William set his sights on an offshore painter blaster career. Offshore jobs generally offer two- or three-week rotations, giving workers valuable time off with their families.
William travelled from Scotland to AIS Training’s state-of-the-art 20-acre training village in Newcastle and stayed in the onsite hotel while completing AIS Training’s ‘Oil and Gas Fabric Maintenance Package’ to prepare his CV for offshore employment. This package of courses has been specially designed by AIS Training to include all mandatory oil and gas training such as BOSIET, MIST and Offshore Medical, as well as several selected courses recommended for those looking to get into offshore fabric maintenance such as IRATA Rope Access and OPITO Blaster Sprayer.
After completing his training, William was dedicated to finding an offshore job and scooped his first offshore role less than a month later. William said:
“Transferring careers was the best decision I’ve ever made. Although my first offshore trip was a bit of a culture shock, I’m quickly getting into the swing of being away from home in the middle of the North Sea.
“I’m used to working hard so the long shifts don’t bother me and the amount of quality time you get with the family when you’re home makes it all worthwhile. “AIS Training was brilliant. The staff were really friendly and the training is exceptionally well-delivered, making it easy to learn everything you need to. Even the restaurant is first-class! I’ll definitely be coming back and I’d recommend the place to anyone looking to get into the offshore sector.”
