Skills Survivex onboard instructor, Ian, who originally hails from Elgin in north east Scotland, has unrivalled experience in the offshore sector having worked in oil and gas and wind energy his entire career. Initially starting out as a roustabout in the North Sea, Ian has enjoyed numerous offshore roles from roughneck to deck foreman and crane operator to supervisor working in different territories across the globe.
Now as a Survivex instructor, Ian uses his vast knowledge and expertise to teach delegates new skills and internationally-recognised safety standards within their own working environment on an oil platform, onshore manufacturing plant, offshore wind farm or wherever needed. As well as OPITO and GWO-approved courses, Ian delivers a wide range of bespoke training tailored to the client’s requirements – everything from crane operator assessments to confined space training, banksman slinger courses or industry-accredited working at height training.
Depending on the global location, Ian uses a translator to help with communication but he also has a working knowledge of the French, Portuguese and Chinese language to quickly put delegates at ease.

Ian explains: “For clients short on time or those who require entire teams training together, onboard training can be extremely effective. Delegates are able to use the exact equipment, company procedures and environment they’ll be working with, so easily relate to the training and focus on the course content. This, teamed with the fact that onboard training is done during work-time, means delegates tend to be very engaged in the entire process.
“We’ll work around the client and personnel work rotas etc. to maximise delegates’ time and eliminate the travel and timetabling headache of sending multiple people off site to attend onshore training courses. It’s a valuable service and one that we’re seeing increasing demand for in the face of Covid-19.”
